Is your daughter ready to Explore?

Join GirlGuiding NZ digital programmes! Girls will work on their badges; be mentored by a dedicated volunteer and have full access to our national events with thousands of other girls.

What is Explore?

The Explore Programme is a subscription-based online platform for girls 5-12.5 years old. It is packed with activities to do in the real world and from any place, on any device, at any time! Girls will grow their confidence and their sense of adventure.

Challenge & Badges

Girls can take on new challenges on their own or with adult support. Each activity counts towards badges for their sashes. Badges are delivered quarterly and a dedicated volunteer supports the girls’ experience all the way.

Science, Fun & Learning

A lot of the activities available on Explore complement the NZ schools’ curriculum. We cover STEAM; different cultures and languages; important events like Matariki and ANZAC Day; leadership; sustainability; arts; and active recreation.

Totally Flexible

Explore activities are a mix of online learning, hands-on activities (experiments and cooking!) and active outdoor fun (pitching a tent, and going on garden treasure hunts). Explore Girls can log on from any device, at any time and have fun learning.

World-First Programme!

Explore is a world-first programme for Guiding and has been built to maximise the Guiding experience, via an online platform. Explore Girls will be ready for the world; they will learn about community issues; how to advocate for change; discover global cultures and languages; and make connections throughout a network of over 10 million girls worldwide!

Real Life Learning!

Through Explore, girls will develop real-life skills they can apply day-to-day such as: Understanding how their brain and body works; Experiencing diversity and other cultures; Orienteering and geocaching; How to protect the planet; STEM activities like coding, pizza science, inventing a robot, making slime… and so much more.

For Pippins and Brownies, activities can be filtered by length, if it’s an outdoor or indoor activity and if it requires adult support, allowing total flexibility for girls, parents and whānau!

Answers to Your Questions

How much does Explore cost?

Explore costs $45 for a 90-day subscription. Only $15 per month! The subscription renews automatically, but you can stop anytime.

Do I need to buy any resources?

Most activities require no special resources, but some activities do. These activities have suggestions on what you can use, but you can swap/change the resources with what you already have at home for any activity. For example, if you don’t have any googly eyes you can make your own using cardboard, paper and a marker.

Your Explore Pippin or Explore Brownie can choose which activities to do, and you can choose to do ones that don’t require you to buy resources, especially if you live remotely.

This resource sheet is a guide for what you can expect to see in some of the Explore activities – PDF.

We hope you have fun with the activities in Explore and we can’t wait to see what you do!

What is the WAGGGS Education model?

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) Educational Method is a unique model of non-formal education to support the development of young people in diverse groups. It creates a learning environment where young people can take the lead and make choices about what they do. Read more here.

What is STEAM?

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. It is an important educational focus area needed to fill global skill shortages and ready young people for success in the 21st century. This is especially important for girls who are underrepresented in STEAM-related careers. STEAM learning develops creativity, innovation, problem solving and curiosity.

What about screentime?

Explore is designed to get girls more active and interested in their wider worlds. The online activities are typically a prompt for the girl to do something in the ‘real world’. We aim for girls to spend only a small portion of their time using the online component, and the vast majority of their time doing activities off-screen.

Do I need to worry about internet safety?

The internet has become an everyday part of life, and children are growing up with it, using it to learn and play more than any generation before them has done. It’s a wonderful resource but we need to make sure that we are safe online; the online safety of your Explorer is of vital importance to us.

That is why our site is:

  • Secure, with SSL encryption
  • Specifically designed for young children
  • Monitored by GirlGuiding NZ

We have made sure that your daughter will be safe on our site.

All of our Leaders have been interviewed, police vetted and offered training for dealing with children.

Why should I join GirlGuiding NZ?

Girls who are involved with Guiding are proven to develop confidence and learn many new skills. Girls are outdoors as much as possible, and they are encouraged to help in their community, learn about other cultures, and work on their motor skills. We believe that we are the only organisation in New Zealand offering such positive and confidence-building activities to girls, and we’d love to be able to make a positive impact in your daughter’s life. You can find out more about GirlGuiding New Zealand here.

“Saria and one of her brothers loved doing this activity. they enjoyed watching the colour spread and they learnt that it was tricky to keep the colours separate. Now I need more food colouring so my other 2 children can have a go.”
